There's no Place Like a Pirate Homecoming

Homecoming at Putnam City High School is celebrated by honoring senior athletes through their success in their sport and success as a student. This event takes place at an assembly and at a football game the same day at the school.

To get students excited for homecoming week, a spirit week takes place and the school is decorated in dedication to the selected students. To select the athletes for homecoming, each sport has their own way of deciding or voting for who to be a candidate.

“It was a really close call between me and my other senior in my volleyball team. It was obviously through our sports and I had one more vote higher than her. So, we either would’ve had to revoke or she would’ve won and if it was either one of us, I would be cool with it because I’m just happy I got to run,” senior Kylah Scott said.

The student athletes that were selected as candidates go through a similar process to find out how they were chosen. Many candidates are excited to run and to see their friends do it as well.

“I was selected through getting voted by different athletes and the process was just me waiting over a few days, then getting a paper telling me that I was selected. I will be rooting for Kylah Scott and Aaron Sanith because I am close to both of them and I think they are both good representatives of our school,” senior Elijah Morrison said.

The homecoming candidates dress in formal attire for the event. They do this in order to feel presentable and to be a great representation of their sport.

“For the gym assembly, I am wearing this short light blue dress with silver heels. And then, for the football field I am wearing a long red dress with silver heels,” senior Josephine Martinez said.

These candidates have all been chosen for their hard work, dedication, and integrity as a student athlete. This event has impacted the candidates in many different ways as it highlights the senior class of 2025.

“For me, homecoming is a celebration for all of the seniors that have made it this far in high school. People don’t realize how difficult it is and how we’re just kids, but we are dealing with a lot. The fact that we made it this far, it’s like a celebration to look at all that we have done,” senior Ray Smith said.
