There’s something special about Putnam City’s wrestling team. It’s a bond where wrestlers to push each other to work harder and to be their best.
“I just like the program. It’s a great team. We all have a good bond, and we’re great practice partners. Plus, the coaches are really good,” senior Layland Jimmerson said.
Going to state is a huge accomplishment for many wrestlers. This is a huge part of their career and the reason why they strive to be the best that they can be. It’s a symbol of how far they’ve come and how hard they’ve worked. The lessons and advice they have been given are important in helping them get to that goal.
This year’s team made school history by sending the most wrestlers to state since 1992. The State Qualifiers include:
• senior Jayden Henson – Three-time state qualifier
• senior Montriel Hall – Three-time state qualifier
• senior Layland Jimmerson
• senior Nathan Brown
• junior Talon Hall
“Putnam City athletics helped me get there by believing in me. They supported me with my diet and gave me advice that helped improve my mindset both on and off the mat,” senior Montriel Hall said.
The friends and family of the wrestlers help the team out a lot. They stay with them throughout the highs and lows. Their encouragement genuinely contributes to the work that the students put in. Whether it’s cheering from the stands or helping with expenses, it makes a lasting impact.
“Our community supports the wrestling team by showing up on big dual days and helping cheer us on. They also support us by helping us pay for things we need,” senior Jayden Henson said.
Each wrestler has their own way of warming up and preparing for a match. They create a routine that they follow in order to focus and get in the zone.
“Before a match, I make sure I’m in the right headspace,” he said. “You can’t go in with a losing mindset at all.”
At Putnam City, wrestling is more than just a sport. It is a tight-knit brotherhood driven by teamwork, and heart. For these student-athletes, the lessons learned on the mat will carry far beyond high school.
